Chimeneas were used as long ago as possibly thousands of years by tribes in Mexico that developed them as a means of providing heat for their families as well as for cooking. They give off a massive amount of heat because of their optimized design which allows air to be drawn in.
Chimeneas can have many different designs but most are a traditional shape which measure about five feet and are about two feet across.
Original clay chimeneas can not withstand a lot of abuse involving water so if you are in a wet climate and leave your clay chimenea outdoors you may experience problems include cracking, flaking and crumbling of the clay. The original clay chimenea originated in Mexico where there is generally low rainfall so they never really had a problem. If they did they simply built another one.
Fortunately for us we can now purchase metal chimeneas and they will hold up against just about anything. Some metal chimineas even have a grated door to close off the fireplace opening and a spark arrestor atop the stack. While it is true that metal chimeneas are much more durable than their clay cousins they can cost more. When compared side by side the added expense is well worth it considering the extended use and the different designs available.
